What is Autism?
ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder):
It is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person communicates, interacts socially, and processes sensory information. It’s called a “spectrum” because it includes a wide range of strengths and challenges that vary from person to person.
Key Characteristics:
- Difficulty with social interaction and communication
- Repetitive behaviors or routines
- Intense focus on specific interests
- Sensory sensitivities (e.g. to sound, light, texture)
ASD typically appears in early childhood, though signs can vary widely. Some individuals may need significant support, while others live independently and thrive with the right accommodations.
It’s important to note: ASD is not a disease—it’s a different way of experiencing the world. Many autistic individuals have exceptional abilities in areas like memory, pattern recognition, or creativity.
Why Does Autism Happen?
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is not caused by one single thing. Instead, it is like a recipe with many ingredients—some you’re born with (genes), and some you encounter around pregnancy or birth (environment). When these ingredients mix in certain ways, the developing brain is built differently, leading to the strengths and challenges we call autism.
The biggest driver: genetics
- Hundreds of genes have been linked to autism.
- About 80 % of autism cases involve inherited gene changes passed from parents; the rest come from new (de-novo) mutations that happen only in the sperm, egg, or embryo.

Think of genes as the blueprint. Tiny misprints in the blueprint don’t break the whole house, but they can change how certain rooms are shaped.

Certain prenatal or early-life factors can raise the odds of autism if the genetic setup is already sensitive:

- Sugar, gluten, or food dyes – no consistent evidence.
Brain differences you can actually see
Modern brain scans show that by 2–3 years of age, many autistic children have:
- Slightly faster growth in certain brain areas (frontal cortex, amygdala).
- Different wiring between the two hemispheres (corpus callosum).
- More or fewer synapses (the “bridges” between neurons)
These changes happen before birth or in the first year, long before any vaccines, foods, or parenting styles enter the picture.
Why more kids are diagnosed today
- Broader definition (DSM-5 now includes Asperger’s & PDD-NOS under ASD).
- Better screening tools like the M-CHAT at 18- and 24-month visits
- Greater awareness among parents, teachers, and doctors.
- The actual number of autistic people has likely not doubled—we’re just finding and naming them better.
